Scale By The Bay 2019: Ville Tuulos Interview

[Music] yeah so my name is Villa tooless I work yeah so my name is Villa tooless I work at Netflix I currently manage the at Netflix I currently manage the machine learning infrastructure team [Music] well obviously Netflix has been involved well obviously Netflix has been involved in scale by the bay like many years now in scale by the bay like many years now so I have always heard good things about so I have always heard good things about the conference that definitely wanted to the conference that definitely wanted to participate this year [Music] well I really like the idea of us being well I really like the idea of us being very human centric so I know that this very human centric so I know that this is a very technical conference like and is a very technical conference like and many many many talks are like really many many many talks are like really technical deep down technical in nature technical deep down technical in nature at the same time it's really important at the same time it's really important to recognize that like ultimately all to recognize that like ultimately all these systems are used by people and these systems are used by people and like we have really wanted to focus on like we have really wanted to focus on that usability on the human centric that usability on the human centric aspects well I mean it will be it will be an well I mean it will be it will be an exciting year for us so we will be I exciting year for us so we will be I mean like the work we have been doing mean like the work we have been doing it's only expanding so that's that's it's only expanding so that's that's always exciting we are also partnering always exciting we are also partnering like with many many different companies like with many many different companies like even outside Netflix so I'm they're like even outside Netflix so I'm they're always new things coming out well netflix is now at the very well netflix is now at the very interesting stage that like the company interesting stage that like the company is now truly global we are basically in is now truly global we are basically in all countries so in the in the world all countries so in the in the world also we are probably the biggest movie also we are probably the biggest movie studio TV studio in the world by now and studio TV studio in the world by now and like with all those dimensions both with like with all those dimensions both with the global aspect and and the fact that the global aspect and and the fact that we are producing so much content like we are producing so much content like brings in a lot of complexity and and brings in a lot of complexity and and the fact is that like like what we are the fact is that like like what we are trying to do is to try to use data and trying to do is to try to use data and try to use machine learning to help to try to use machine learning to help to manage that complexity so I think that manage that complexity so I think that like we are like a playing an important like we are like a playing an important small party in like helping Netflix small party in like helping Netflix scales well I well I'm actually I do like the well I well I'm actually I do like the fact that this conference is a bit fact that this conference is a bit smaller so there are many other smaller so there are many other conferences like Amazon we invent that conferences like Amazon we invent that like have 70,000 people I know that like have 70,000 people I know that maybe that's the eventual target for maybe that's the eventual target for scale by the bay as well but I do like scale by the bay as well but I do like the fact that like this is this really the fact that like this is this really focused conference like and the people focused conference like and the people who come and participate are like really who come and participate are like really experts in their fields experts in their fields [Music]
